Hiking along the Fabulous Coastline

Hiking along the Amalfi Coast is almost meditative. It is probably one of the most scenic trails, world over and a trip to Italy without hiking in Amalfi Coast can be considered incomplete. Walking amidst Olive tree groves, sweet smelling lemon trees and bright yellow brooms is a memorable experience. To top it, the pristine waters of the Mediterranean below, dotted sometime with the odd speedboat or a yacht render one speechless.

Type of Hike

Walk of the Gods or Sentiero degli Dei is one of the most written and trodden trails among the Amalfi Coast. It is a moderately difficult hike but is compensated abundantly by the magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea. The path starts at 630 meters above sea level and descends to 430 meters above sea level. The path is narrow and rugged most of the time bordered only by a steep drop right into the Mediterranean Sea. It requires a little bravado to attempt it by well worth it once done.

Walk Of The Gods Starting Point

The Walk of the Gods stretches from the tiny village of Nocelle, the highest point of Positano to Bomerano in the Agerola’s district in the west. The ideal start would be from Bomerano to Positano. This is the best way because though the trek is a little arduous, when faced with glorious sights right ahead it makes it interesting and bearable.

Best Season to visit

As such the weather is bearable all through the year but to capture the best pictures and to avoid the crowd, April to June is the best period. It is the time when the nascent buds of spring dot the beautiful coast rendering it into a colorful canvas that every artist would want to paint.

August and July will be crowded and oppressively hot.

Points To Remember

  • You will need a sturdy pair of hiking shoes to manage the rough and unsteady terrain, which is really narrow in several places and tends to get slippery too.
  • Carry plenty of water that will suffice till you reach some snack joint or taps. The trek is tough and you will perspire a lot. It is paramount that you stay hydrated.
  • Carry a camera to capture the glorious sights along the way.
  • Not for the very young and not physically fit
  • Rest, relax and soak in the beauty for a while

Ending point

Once you reach Positano you can descend the 1500 odd steps and reach the village and have a much deserved treat. It is also from Positano that you can take public transport to your destination.

You can start your trek from Praiano as well. This is a much tougher route when compared to the Bomerano route as there are several steps along the path. That said the panoramic views from the Colle Serra are to be seen to be believed.

The walk of the Gods is picture perfect – the blue sky above, the deep blue sea below and a narrow mountain trail. The World Heritage Amalfi Coastline is best viewed from this path. The scenery from here often fills the tourists with a sense of awe that they carry home long after they have descended the mountain.
