Amalfi Coast Guide & Rooftop Bar Guide

The beaches of the Amalfi Coast are not what you might expect. They are mainly idyllic bays, natural havens where the sea and the coastline engage in a leisurely, almost eternal dance. These beaches, predominantly covered in pebbles, are nestled at the foot of towering cliffs, making them accessible primarily by boat. Here are some of the most renowned beaches along the Amalfi Coast:

The Best beaches of the Amalfi Coast

Marina Grande Beach, Positano: Marina Grande is the quintessential Amalfi Coast beach, and it perfectly embodies the region’s beachscape. Adored by the jet set for its glamour, this beach is backed by the vibrant, colorful houses of Positano. It’s an ideal spot to soak up the sun and enjoy a refreshing drink and great sea food in one of the many bars and restaurants. If you are looking for less crowed beaches try the beaches of Fornillo or Arienzo.

Marina Grande Beach Amalfi

Another prominent beach on the Amalfi Coast is Marina Grande in Amalfi. It is one of the largest and busiest beaches, thanks to its central location. During the summer months from June to September, boats depart from the dock at Marina Grande to reach secluded bays accessible only by sea. It’s a bustling spot, not recommended for those seeking solitude. A good option to escape the crowed near Amalfi is a beach called Il Duglio.

The beach of Vietri sul Mare

Marina di Vietri: This beach, also known as Marina di Vietri, is one of the rare sandy beaches on the Amalfi Coast. Easily accessible by car and quite spacious, it’s well-suited for families and those who appreciate comfort.

The Amazing beaches of the Amalfi Coast

The beach of Erchie

Erchie boasts not one but two beaches. The main beach in Erchie stretches about 200 meters and is flanked by the village’s houses. However, the real gem is Spiaggia di Cauco, nestled between Torre Cerniola and Torre del Tummolo. Crystal clear waters and sheer cliffs surround the splendid Erchie beach, accessible only by sea. Unlike Marina Grande in Amalfi, the sun sets here in the early afternoon.

The Beach of Furore

Furore is renowned for its magnificent fjord and features a small beach perfect for late risers who arrive for lunch. The beach is only sunlit for a few hours in the afternoon. Furore Beach is among the most enchanting and photographed spots on the Amalfi Coast, accessible by sea or via steep stairways descending from the SS163 state road.

The beaches of Maiori

The best beach in Maiori is Cavallo Morto or Cala Bellavaia. Perched on a steep cliff overlooking the sea, this white sandy beach is accessible only by boat. Its crystal-clear, deep blue waters make it a great spot for snorkeling. The main beach in Maiori is the most extensive beach along the Amalfi Coast, offering nearly a kilometer of sandy shoreline dotted with several bathing establishments. What sets this beach apart from others on the Amalfi Coast is its unique, level waterfront—a result of a catastrophic flood and subsequent landslide in 1954 that reshaped the town’s coastal area.

The transformation of Maiori’s seaside into a flat expanse of sandy beach, combined with the abundance of beachfront hotels and restaurants, has made it a preferred destination for families. It’s especially popular among those with young children, thanks to the gentle gradient of the shoreline and ample space for relaxation and play.

Hidden beaches of the Amalfi Coast

Gavitella: Located in Praiano, Gavitella Beach is one of the smaller gems of the Amalfi Coast. It’s just thirty meters long and mainly covered in pebbles. To access it, you’ll need to descend a staircase, but the breathtaking views of Positano, Li Galli islands and Capri make the effort worthwhile. It’s one of the few places on the coast where you can enjoy the sun until sunset.

Il Duoglio: One of the Amalfi Coast’s hidden gems is the beautiful Duoglio Beach. Situated one kilometer from Amalfi, it can be reached by taking a long staircase with four hundred steps from the SS163. An easier alternative is to catch a boat from Amalfi. If you’re seeking the cleanest sea on the Amalfi Coast, this is the place. The beach is mostly pebbled and approximately 170 meters long. Duoglio Beach offers two public beaches and an area for free bathing, and it’s sunny until early afternoon.

Atrani Beach is a relatively quieter option compared to some of the more bustling coastal areas, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and tranquility.

Minori Beach: Minori is another charming coastal village, and its beach is a great place to relax. It’s a long stretch of pebbled shoreline where you can soak up the sun and enjoy the serene atmosphere. There are also various cafes and restaurants nearby where you can savor local cuisine and fresh seafood.

Cetara Beach: Cetara is a small fishing village known for its anchovy production, and it offers a unique and less touristy beach experience. The beach in Cetara is a mix of pebbles and sand, and it’s perfect for those seeking a more local and authentic atmosphere. The town’s vibrant fishing culture adds to the charm.

The Amalfi Coast is dotted with countless secret coves and hidden beaches waiting to be discovered. Many of these are accessible only by boat or via steep staircases, but they offer unparalleled seclusion and natural beauty.

Whether you’re looking for lively and glamorous beaches like Marina Grande in Positano or tranquil, lesser-known spots such as Atrani and Cetara, the Amalfi Coast has a beach to suit every preference.
